Inclination
KONE commercial escalators are available with two angles of inclination: 30° and 35°.

30° inclination
  • This popular inclination offers a good compromise between passenger comfort, safety and the overall length of the escalator
  • Used in both commercial and infrastructure applications

35° inclination
  • Offers the most compact dimensions
  • Preferable when space is restricted on site
  • Offers the lowest capital cost for a given vertical rise
  • Common in retail applications

Drive
Worm gear transmission is characterized by low noise, stable transmission and good vibration damping.

Helical gear transmission is characterized by the ability to transmit high torques in a very small space. It has a higher efficiency than worm gear transmission even at low speeds. At higher speeds it does produce higher noise levels than worm gear transmission.

Transition Radii
1.5/1.0 refers to a transition radius of 1.5 at the top and 1.0 at the bottom. Please also note that the choice of transition radii is linked to inclination, speeds and the number of horizontal steps.

Step Width
Commercial escalators are generally available in three step widths: 600, 800 and 1000 mm.

600 mm step width
  • Allows only one adult passenger to stand on each step
  • Should only be selected where space for an escalator is restricted, as it is uncomfortable for passengers and presents an old-fashioned appearance
  • As space is very restricted between the balustrades, is only suitable for installations where passengers will not be carrying large shopping bags or luggage

800 mm step width
  • Allows one adult passenger and a small child, or one adult passenger with shopping bags or luggage (i.e. 1.5 passengers) to stand on each step
  • Suitable for medium or low usage installations, such as shops

1000 mm step width
  • Allows two adult passengers to stand on each step
  • Maximizes transport capacity for high usage installations such as large department stores, shopping malls, airports and railway stations

Intermediate Support or Reinforced Truss
(when required)
When the length of the escalator would result in the truss exceeding the maximum permitted deflection of 1/750 of the distance between supports, an intermediate support or reinforced truss is required.

Operational Mode
Continuous
The unit is started by a key switch and runs continuously in the selected direction until stopped by a key switch or the emergency stop.

Stop & Go
This mode is the same as Continuous except that the unit stops after a pre-selected time if no passengers are detected. If a passenger is then detected at either landing, the unit restarts in the pre-selected direction.

Stand-by speed
This mode of operation is the same as Stop & Go except that the unit is slowed down to a stand-by speed by the inverter instead of beingstopped. The stand-by speed is approximately 40% of nominal speed, namely 0.2 m/s for an escalator normally operating at 0.5 m/s.

Side Cladding Options
For safety reasons, it is imperative that all exposed truss sides are fitted with cladding to protect the public from rotating machinery within the escalator. Please only select None if the escalator will be installed between two walls (ie. underground tunnel) and will not have any machinery exposed.

Chain type
Standard chain
Lubricated step chain is standard step chain for escalators . Only the optimum amount of lubricating oil is used to achieve the service life of the chains. A lightly used escalator requires less lubrication than a heavily used one. This minimizes the accumulation of excess oil within the escalator truss and the resulting environmental and fire hazards.

Automatic step chain lubrication is also available if deemed necessary for commercial reasons.

Lubrication free chain
Lubrication-free step chains do not require regular oil lubrication. Maintenance time is therefore reduced and, as there is no accumulation of oil within the truss, internal truss cleaning requirements are minimal. Options not using regular oil lubrication within the escalator truss resulting cleaner environment and lower fire hazard risk.
